A MAN has been arrested and a large bag of cannabis seized after a pursuit which ended in Weyhill today.

Police followed the suspect from the A303, towards Tidworth and then on to Andover before he was eventually stopped in the Fairground Industrial Estate.

There, the driver was arrested on suspicion of drug and driving charges. He remains in custody.

The pursuit began across the county border in Wiltshire.

Police say that at around 12.10pm this afternoon, the driver of a white Ford Focus failed to stop for officers on the A303, near Amesbury.

A pursuit was authorised, with specially-trained police officers following the vehicle as it sped along the eastbound carriageway, before leaving the road on the A338 towards Tidworth, and then the A342 towards Andover.

The car came to a stop in the Fairground Industrial Estate, in Weyhill, at around 12.20pm.

A 20-year-old man from Buckinghamshire was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and possession with intent to supply Class B drugs.

He is currently in custody at Melksham Police Station.

A rucksack, containing a large amount of cannabis, which had been thrown from the vehicle, was also seized by police.

Det Con Ben Brewster, from Wiltshire police's community tasking team, said: "Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, we are continuing to apprehend and arrest those who come into Wiltshire with the intention of transporting and supplying drugs.

"The driver in this case was obviously desperate to avoid officers, as he was driving in an incredibly reckless and dangerous way, reaching speeds of up to 90mph.

"Thankfully, nobody was injured and the pursuit came to an end safely and relatively swiftly."
