The number of coronavirus cases is more than doubling each week in one part of Andover, new figures reveal.

Government statistics reveal that the virus is growing exponentially in the Andover Charlton and Bourne Valley area.

In this area, the number of new cases recorded in the seven days to December 29 is more than 185 per cent up on the previous seven days.

The area is a 'Middle layer Super Output Area' (MSOA) and contains the Charlton area of Andover, plus the villages of Hatherden, Hurstbourne Tarrant, Upton and Vernham Dean.

MSOAs are generally smaller than council wards and are based on population rather than geographical area.

Cases are also more than doubling in Chilbolton, Clatford and Barton Stacey, which has seen 157.1 per cent more cases in the most recent week of statistics, as well as Over Wallop and Shipton Bellinger (up 144.4 per cent).

Across Test Valley, 454 people tested positive for Covid-19 in the seven days to December 29, which was 168 more than the week before.

It means that the number of cases in the borough increased by 58.7 per cent.

After the Advertiser reported last week that Andover Central had seen Covid cases triple, the area remains the hotspot in the borough.

It has a rolling rate - the number of cases per 100,000 of the population - of 437, recording 35 new cases in the week to December 29.

This was down four on the week before.

Andover West, which also includes the likes of Weyhill and Appleshaw, has seen its coronavirus rate drop by a third compared to last week.

The area has recorded 23 new cases in the seven days to December 29, which is down eleven, or 32.4 per cent, on the previous seven days.

An interactive map on the government website shows just how many people have tested positive for the virus in each area of the county over the seven-day period up to Tuesday, December 29.

The interactive map allows users to type in their postcode and see how many cases were reported in their area and if it has increased or decreased from the week before. The darker the colour on the image, the more positive test results have been recorded.

The map highlights which areas of the nation have three or more confirmed cases of the virus and colour co-coordinates the areas by how many cases they have.

The latest figures reflect the period soon after Christmas, just days after most of Hampshire went into tier four measures.
