Applications have opened for a rare opportunity to join one of Andover's oldest 'families' by applying to live in one of the town's almshouses.

Two vacancies are available in The Andover Charities’ bungalows on Borsberry Close to anyone living in Andover, with applications open until the end of the month. Those applying will need to demonstrate their need for support, and if successful, will be provided with heavily subsidised accommodation in the bungalows.

The charity’s entry criteria state that those applying must be: “Poor persons of good character who (except in special cases to be approved by the commissioners) are resident in the area of the ‘Ancient Parish of Andover’ at the time of appointment.”

The Andover Charities is an organisation that helps those who find themselves - through no fault of their own - in significant need, and who live in Andover and the surrounding area.

It dates back to 1836, though it is composed of a number of predecessor groups that are much older. These include a number of charities established through the wills of residents such as Catherine Hanson, Thomas Cornelius and Ambrose Massey, who left money to support the people of Andover in perpetuity.

The charity owns the Acre Almhouses in Adelaide Road as well as 15 bungalows in Borsberry Close, which are given to those who need it in the community.

Anyone applying will go through a selection process, which is open to people of any gender, good character and living the Ancient Parish of Andover.

All applicants will be asked to complete an application form giving their full personal details, together with their housing and financial circumstances. However, the charity says that all applicants will be considered and assessed on their need, with financial status not a bar to appointment.

If necessary, the charity will shortlist those most in need for an interview before the appointments are confirmed by the trustees.

Applications are open until July 31, with application forms available by emailing: andovercharitiestrustees@gmail.com. These should be returned to the clerk together with two recent testimonials.

Anyone needing further information is asked to leave a message on 07398 155704.
