A lorry has overturned on A303 eastbound causing severe delays near Barton Stacey.

Motorists are facing ‘bumper-to-bumper’ queues and ‘unprecedented’ levels of traffic as delays are building towards Andover.

Lane one of the carriageway, and the slip roads at Barton Stacey are currently closed.

According to updates from the Hampshire Drivers group on Facebook, Whitchurch is also gridlocked due to the closures on A303.

Traffic is currently being diverted on A3093 around Picket Twenty to Whitchurch road.

According to police, the driver of the lorry suffered minor injuries.

A spokesperson for the Hampshire Constabulary told the Advertiser: "We were called at 9.38 this morning to reports that a lorry had overturned on the A303 Eastbound.

"The driver of the lorry, a man in his 60s, has reported minor injuries. No other vehicles were involved.

"Lane one of the carriageway is currently closed, as well as the slip roads at Barton Stacey.

"We remain at the scene at this time."

According to fire and rescue personnel, diesel and engine oil had leaked from the lorry, but the spills were contained close to the source immediately.

A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service told the Advertiser: "Firefighters from Andover, Whitchurch, Winchester and Basingstoke, were called to the A303 east, near to the Walworth roundabout at Bullington Cross, at 09:47 today.

"One lorry was on its side and crews released one male from the vehicle. He was handed over to SCAS colleagues.

"Diesel and engine oil had leaked from the vehicle, but the spills were contained close to source and did not enter the water system.

"Our crews stayed on to make the scene safe before handing the incident over to the police.

A motorist who got stuck on the route said she has never seen such traffic on A303 before.

“First I thought the roads are congested because people are probably going away for the weekend, trying to get away from the heatwave.

“But then I realised it is a traffic incident.”
