A SERIES of photographs taken by a resident show the shocking scene on Saturday morning (July 24), as firefighters endeavoured to control the blaze caused by lightning.

Six pumps from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were mobilised at 4.37am to the two properties on Mercia Avenue in Charlton affected by the roof fire.

Thankfully, everyone was evacuated safely and neighbours rallied around the occupants to support them at such a devastating time.

One resident of the street, Tayla Moody, shared a selection of photographs with the Advertiser, taken as the emergency services battled the rapidly spreading flames.

They show the water jets and other apparatus used, which HIWFRS group manager Andy Weeks later told our reporter caused significant additional flooding damage to the properties.

Tayla said: "It was awful to watch it happen and not be able to do anything to help. It broke my heart."

Now, the community is banding together in the hope of helping their friends rebuild their lives.
