A GROUP of Spanish climate activists walked through Andover on their way from Portsmouth to Glasgow for the COP 26 Climate Conference.

The activists were greeted by members of Andover Extinction Rebellion, Test Valley Friends of the Earth, Andover Quakers and local residents as they arrived in Andover High Street.

Three people from Andover accompanied the Spanish group on their day’s walk from Winchester to Hurstbourne Tarrant while others provided food and accommodation and sandwiches for the next day.

A day before they reached Andover, there was a gathering of environment groups and choirs singing ‘Song for the Climate’ and a march through the streets outside Winchester Guildhall.

A group from Andover joined this mass singing. So they were able to greet the arrival of the Spanish walkers in Andover High Street with this rousing song.

Andover XR (Extinction Rebellion) asked the walkers to take a message to the politicians at COP 26 and they will carry this postcard to Glasgow.

The walk, named ‘Marcha a Glasgow’, hopes to influence world governments by demonstrating they are putting in a huge effort and commitment to walk to Glasgow and if they can put in so much effort so can the politicians who the world is now depending on to make substantial cuts in carbon emission and reduce the predicted impact of Climate Change.

By visiting towns and cities, the activists are hoping to raise awareness of the Climate Crisis and show politicians this topic is a urgent concern throughout the county and throughout the world.

Cities and towns on their route include Portsmouth, Southampton, Andover, Newbury, Oxford, Banbury, Coventry, Leicester, Loughborough, Nottingham, Chesterfield, Sheffield, Wakefield, Leeds, Harrogate, Rippon, Northallerton, Darlington, Durham, Newcastle, Dalkeith, Edinburgh, and arriving in Glasgow before COP 26 Climate talk at the beginning of November.
