RESIDENTS in Andover have spoken out in support of new coronavirus measures which have come back into place from today (Tuesday, November 30).

The government announced at the weekend that it would be heighhtening restrictions once more in response to the new Omicron variant, which has been detected in the UK over the past week.

Boris Johnson has ordered the return of mandatory mask-wearing in shops and on public transport, and for contacts of Omicron cases to self-isolate, even if they are vaccinated.

In addition, all international arrivals will have to take a PCR test by the end of their second day in the UK.

The Prime Minister said the “temporary and precautionary” measures will be reviewed in three weeks.

We asked our readers whether they agreed or disagreed with the decision to re-introduce mandatory masks, and the vast majority of respondents supported the measure, with many saying they did not think the rules surrounding face coverings should ever have been relaxed.

Mary Flippence wrote: “Absolutely agree with this. Haven't stopped wearing my mask all the way through this pandemic!”

Luce Flynn added: “Totally agree. I've not stopped wearing one since they became non mandatory. I think the relaxing of the rules was made too soon. Should never have stopped.”

WHile Lilian Da Silva said: “I never stopped wearing mine. We have to live with this virus, so let's just get on and take precautions. Is wearing a mask such a big deal? NO!”

However, not everyone agreed with a few people casting doubt over the effectiveness of mask wearing, and others concerned that compliance will be low.

Jady Hall Morledge wrote:” It doesn't bother me, but after hearing it does not make a difference, I don't know who to believe.”

Jordan Lillywhite added: “Never really wore one before, doesn’t actually do anything anyway.”

While Lionel Whyton said: “I’m in total agreement, but there will be many who won’t comply.”
