A VILLAGE shop is celebrating the success of its new self-serve milk scheme which allows customers to stock up with fresh milk, while cutting their use of plastic.

Enham Village Post Office and Store, on Newbury Road, Enham Alamein, is part of the SPAR group, and has been selling Cornish milk from Trewithen Dairy for a long time.

However, in October, the team installed a self-serve machine, which allows customers to fill up their own glass bottles as and when they want fresh milk.

Speaking to the Advertiser, Leslie Francis - who has run the store with her husband Tim for more than 17 years - said: “It does away with the need for plastics, and we are trying to reduce plastic use. It’s much fresher and nicer [than pre-bottles milk], and it’s readily available - we get it delivered every other day.”

She continued: “The uptake has been unbelievable! People are travelling to us to get it now, as there’s nowhere else in the area to get it.

“It’s completely on demand, so people can come and get what they need when they need it. We have a couple of residents who will just fill half a bottle, for example! While others might want a crate with four or six bottles in it.”

In addition, Leslie and the team have partnered with local business Hurstbourne Forge, who have made handcrafted bottle crates, so that customers can easily transport the produce.

“There’s nothing worse than spilled milk!” said Leslie. “So this sits nicely on a car floor.

“We gave away 150 of the full-litre bottles when we first started it, and people can purchase these from us.”
