A water company helped to keep taps flowing and toilets flushing across Hampshire during Storm Eunice.

In preparation for the storm, Southern Water installed 45 mobile generators on sites which didn’t already have redundancy.

They also had Enough bottled water to serve 40,000 people on stand-by.

Southern Water’s chief operating officer Lawrence Gosden said: We’ve had very many sites hit by power outages but prudent pre-event mobilisation and crisis response has kept our customers served in all but a small number of places. Strong winds and power outages continue so continued vigilance is needed.”

“Hampshire was challenged by power loss to six remote water booster pumps. We initially estimated up to 360 properties could have been hit but by ringing customers we now believe around 100 were affected. Bottled water was delivered to people on our priority service register and we continue to make bottled water deliveries,” said Andrew Beebee, one of the drinking water incident team leads during the storm.

John Penicud, head of wastewater treatment, said: “We have faced challenges across the region with hundreds of wastewater sites - ranging from treatment sites to the smallest pumping stations - losing power. We still have over 250 sites with no mains power and we have around 25 mobile generators out across the network support the most crucial sites. We are pleased that currently we have had no major spills or pollutions and this has been no mean feat. All our customers continued to be able to use their facilities as normal.”
