AN ANDOVER schoolboy has braved a major hair chop to raise money for a homelessess charity.

As previously reported, ten-year-old Mason Gibbs decided he wanted to do something after shopping in Southampton where he saw a number of homeless people.

Mason Gibbs, who attends Portway Junior School, had been growing his hair for four years and charity Shelter was a cause he was willing to part with it for, so he launched a fundraiser with the aim of raising £100.

He has now raised more than £1,000 and had his long locks cut on Tuesday, April 12 with Sam at Bee Hair salon in Andover.

He will also be donating his hair to the Little Princess Trust, a charity which makes wigs for children who have lost their hair for various different reasons.

Speaking ahead of the big day, his mum, Lesley, said: “Mason’s been growing his hair for over four years and absolutely loves it. I was very shocked he asked to have it cut off, but not surprised. Everyone who knows Mason knows he has the biggest heart and is very kind and caring. I think he’s very brave and I’m extremely proud of him.”

She continued: “We looked at different charities and decided Shelter would be the best option as they help lots of different people with housing issues which is a cause that Mason is passionate about.

“We are overwhelmed with everyone’s generosity. We are very grateful to everyone who has sponsored Mason and can’t thank everyone enough.”
