HAMPSHIRE residents who have reported the smell of smoke, have been told that it could be from a fire as far away as Surrey. 

A number of people said they could smell and see hazy smoke on Saturday afternoon.

A local weather enthusiast said it is due to a fire in Surrey. 

Weather account Bournemouth and Poole Weather said: "We’ve currently got a strong breeze gusting to 30-35mph blowing from a steady North Easterly direction.

"It's this wind that is bringing the burning smell across large parts of south. I was at Paultons Park earlier and there was actually some ash falling from the from sky.

"With the wind unlikely to change direction the burning smell will continue for a while yet."

Surrey Fire Service are tackling the a huge wildfire nearly Henley Park in Pirbright. 

More than 12 fire crews and specialist units are at the scene. 

Residents near the fire were advised to avoid the area and keep their  windows and doors closed. 

The fire is believed to be conatined but it has been reported a second blaze has started nearby the one at Henley Park in Pirbright.

Neighbouring Hampsire Fire Service are also in attendance.
