TWO Andover councillors have taken part in a 10k charity run to raise funds for a youth charity.

Town councillors Rebecca Meyer and David Treadwell took on their first ever charity run last month for an Andover cause close to their hearts.

The pair started running together when Cllr Meyer invited Cllr Treadwell to parkrun in Charlton with her last year for the first time, and they both now go regularly.

However, Cllr Treadwell had not done an official race before when the two of them decided to participate in the Corsham 10k on April 24.

They are raising funds for DMK Potential, an Andover-based charity which aims to provide young people with the resources, opportunities and services they may need to become confident and mature members of society.

Cllr Meyer said: “I decided to support this charity for my first ever charity run because the youth of today are tomorrow’s future leaders. It is in everyone’s best interests to support the youth of today. They have been so adversely affected by COVID19 that a charity such as this can make a great impact on people’s lives with far reaching consequences.”

She continued: “The decisions that we make in our younger years can decide much of our future and society in general. We all have a vested interest in ensuring the youth of today become successful people, whatever their definition of success. Decisions that we and everyone makes can have a ripple effect of which we cannot even begin to comprehend the consequences. What you do matters and what youths do matter.

“I had so many people assisting me along the way when I grew up and I want to give back. I grew up in a very small town and we pretty much all supported one another. Without this support I would not be who I am today. How can I not want to pass this on?

“Don’t be slug. Get out there and make your life better and while you're at it, someone else’s.”

Dmitrijs Meiksans, founder of DMK Potential, added: “We are so happy to see, as a charity, that local councillors are supporting our cause, and especially that they are able to put any local politics behind them and simply fundraise for the charity.

“The funds will enable us to support even more young people to access local volunteering opportunities, conferences and events by eliminating any costs associated - such as bus tickets, food and drink costs, and more.”

Due to signing up last minute, Cllrs Meyer and Treadwell are hoping to raise retrospectively raise their £250 goal.
