DOG lovers from across Andover and beyond gathered at Vigo Road Recreation Park on Sunday (June 12) to celebrate 125 years of the Blue Cross.

The animal charity marked the occasion with a free fun day event, featuring an array of craft stalls, pre-loved goods and delicious food as well as popular contests for attendees furry friends.

Paula Plain, manager of the Blue Cross charity shop on Andover High Street, said: "It was amazing to see such a great turn out at the show and to meet so many stunning dogs and lovely owners.

"Overall an amazing total of £771 was raised."

She added: "Many thanks to all who supported us from my awesome volunteers, the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress, stall holders and everyone who came to enjoy the day."

Deputy Mayor of Test Valley, Cllr Phil Lashbrooke, said: "It was an immense pleasure to open the Blue Cross Dog Show, which was a splendidly organised event and was very well attended.   It wasn’t only the crowds who were having a great time, the dogs too entered into the joyful spirit of the show.

"My very grateful thanks to everyone involved in organising and staging this fun filled day.

"For 125 years, the Blue Cross has been at the forefront of animal welfare and support.  I wish the Blue Cross very success for the future."

Cllr Iris Andersen (TVBC, St Mary's ward) added: "It was an amazing event with such beautiful dogs coming into the park to enter the different categories."

Speaking previously about the charity's work previously, Paula said: “We are really proud to have changed millions of lives in our 125-year history but the need for our help is growing all the time.”

2022 is the 125th anniversary of Blue Cross, originally called ‘Our Dumb Friends League’.

The charity formed to help vulnerable pets and their owners and continues this work today across its rehoming, clinical, animal behaviour, pet bereavement support and educational work.
