FAMILIES in Andover are invited to take part in fun archaeology activities at Stonehenge this summer.

English Heritage is inviting residents to take part in the activities each and also enjoy the popular family trail - the Stonehenge Summer Explorer Quest.

Also back by popular demand is Gnomus, the kind and gentle giant who regales visitors with tales of mystery and wonder about the age old monument.

Young budding archaeologists are invited to try their hand at unearthing the past in the special Stonehenge excavation sandboxes, using a selection of archaeologists’ tools. Replica artefacts from across the centuries are ready to be found, giving children the chance to get excited about the past and learn more about the history of Stonehenge through the things that have been left behind.  The Kids’ Dig Crew will be on hand to reveal the stories behind the treasures found, and what place they have in the story of Stonehenge.

Scott Ashman, head of historic properties for Stonehenge said, “There’s so much to see and do at Stonehenge this summer and families could easily spend the best part of a day with us, and perhaps make a visit to Old Sarum too. Our hands on summer archaeology activity and Explorer Quest are a great way to have fun and find out some amazing facts about the Stonehenge. There’s always more to discover at Stonehenge, and we hope that lots of families will come along and get involved.”

After making some exciting archaeological discoveries, residents can pick up a free Summer Explorer Quest sheet, check out the Neolithic Houses and chat to the friendly English Heritage volunteers to find out what everyday life was like for the people of Stonehenge.

Stonehenge is open from 9:30am -7.00pm throughout the summer with last admissions at 5pm. The Stonehenge Kid’s Dig activity runs between  July 23 and  September 4 from 10am - 6pm daily and is suitable for children aged 5 and upwards to enjoy.
