HEAVY delays are building on a major road from Whitchurch following a traffic incident involving nine vehicles, according to police.

A34 Northbound is currently fully closed following the traffic incident on Friday morning (August 26).

Police said the incident occurred just before the exit for Wash Water.

Some minor injuries have been reported.

However, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Services said the incident involved seven vehicles.  

According to Hampshire Road Policing Unit, the A34 northbound after Tothill Services is currently closed and will likely remain so for one hour.

The A34 southbound remains open and unaffected.

According to Romanse, the traffic update account of Hampshire County Council, there is approximately 45 minutes delay heading back towards Litchfield.

There are also heavy delays building on approach roads.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said: "We were called just before 9am this morning to reports of a road traffic collision on the A34 northbound just before the exit for Wash Water.

"Nine vehicles were involved and some minor injuries were reported.

"A section of the northbound carriageway of the A34 has been temporarily closed."

A spokesperson from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Services said: "Firefighters from Hampshire and Berkshire were alerted at 09.45 this morning [Friday, August 26] to a road traffic collision involving seven vehicles on the A34 northbound between Tothill Services and the junction with the A343. 

"No persons were trapped, with paramedics on the scene to assess members of the public involved in the incident. 

"HIWFRS crews worked to make the scene safe before the incident was handed over to Hampshire Constabulary officers who are working to reopen the road. 

"Firefighters left the scene at around 10:50."
