LANDLORDS have said a fond farewell to a Goodworth Clatford pub by raising nearly a thousand pounds for charity through their last-ever quiz.

Monday, September 1 was a special night for landlords of the Royal Oak, Mike and Kate Lawton, who held their well-known pub quiz where they raised an impressive sum of £902.50, which will go towards finding a cure for Parkinson's.

Finding a cure for the disease is a cause close to their hearts as Mike's dad, John, sadly suffered from the disease as well as friend and frequent customer at the pub, Bobbie Coelho, who was diagnosed in 2002 and turned 70 on the same day of the quiz.

The pub's last quiz was also a good farewell for Mike and Kate as they are leaving the popular tavern after 21 years. The pub will soon be taken over by the owners of The Crown pub in Cholderton.

Bobbie and her husband Stephen have taken part in the Royal Oak quiz for the last 14 years and until recently ran Andover's support group for Parkinson's that sadly stopped due to a lack of funding.

Stephen said: "It felt great that everyone raised so much money for Parkinson's. Me and my wife would like to thank everyone who helped raise this sum of money, especially the pub staff who donated £90."

A cheque for £7,400 was also presented at the quiz by Mary Doherty and Dawn Huntley, which they raised by doing car boot sales, and was given to Professor Richard Wade Martin and his staff from the Oxford Parkinson’s Disease Centre who were also at the quiz.
