AN ANDOVER takeaway has promised to improve after receiving a one-out-of-five food hygiene rating.

The Golden Dragon, in High Street, was given the rating after it was inspected on August 17 by the Food Standard Agency (FSA).

The inspector found several faults while assessing the takeaway, finding that both the cleanliness of the building and the way that staff handled food would both need to be improved.

The FSA also said that major improvement was needed in regard to management of food safety – defined by the agency as system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that the staff know about food safety and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.

A spokesperson for the Golden Dragon wanted to reassure customers that efforts were being taken to respond to the agency’s concerns.

The spokesperson said: “We have done everything that needs doing on the advisory.

“We have worked over the last few weeks to get everything back in place.

“What [the food safety officer] wants us to look into, action has been taken.

“Whatever he wants us to fix, we’ve fixed it.

“We’ve done a deep clean, we’ve done everything that we can, and we have retrained the staff with the up-to-date Safer Food pack which is a food safety course of level 2.”

Food hygiene ratings awarded by the Food Standards Agency range from zero (urgent improvement is required) to five (hygiene standards are very good).
