POLICE are asking Andover residents to stay alert following an increased number of reports of purse thefts in the town centre.

Andover Neighbourhood Policing Team said victims have had their purses stolen when they have been in shops in Andover High Street, mainly charity shops.

Officers are now encouraging residents to stay alert when they are out shopping in town.

Police urged people to make sure they keep their purses zipped in bags and avoid leaving them in sight of others.

There are purse cables available from Andover police station. These cables attach to the purse on one end and the bag on the other, making it harder for a purse to be taken.

Officers said they also have bells available at the station which can be attached to purses.

Residents are encouraged to report any problems via 101 or online on Hampshire Constabulary’s website.
