A MAJOR town centre road in Andover has been closed for hours following a serious assault.

ROMANSE, which provides traffic updates for Hampshire, took to Twitter to share the news on Saturday, October 15.

Bridge Street is currently closed eastbound between A3057 Western Avenue and High Street.

The account tweeted: "#Andover - Bridge St (one-way system) CLOSED eastbound between A3057 Western Ave and High St due to a police incident, expect delays."

Since then Hampshire Police have confirmed a man in his 20s has been taken to  Southampton General Hospital after being assaulted on Bridge Street. He is in a serious condition.

Stagecoach South has also shared the news on Twitter.

Its account said: "#Andover - Bridge Street, road closure while police investigate an incident. All buses that were supposed to serve Bridge Street bus stop, will be diverted via A3057 Western Avenue and East Street back on route. Thank you.

 

AA Traffic News has also reported the incident.

It states: "Road closed and slow traffic due to police incident on Bridge Street One Way Street from A3057 Western Avenue to Winchester Street."

"Traffic is coping well. Ongoing since 09:30 this morning."
