BASINGSTOKE'S MP Maria Miller has reacted after the news that Lizz Truss has resigned as prime minister.

Her resignation comes after weeks of chaos following a disastrous mini-budget which plunged the economy into turmoil.

Ms Miller said: "This is a sad, personal decision for Liz Truss who has served our country in two of the most senior offices of state. There are few who could take on this extraordinary job at a time of global crisis.

“What our country needs now is the swift appointment of a new prime minister to lead the Government team of Ministers, taking over delivery of the Manifesto which people voted for in 2019, continuing to lead the efforts to ensure support for the people of Ukraine, and to ensure the right support is in place for people struggling with energy bills.”

Ms Miller has since backed fellow Hampshire MP Penny Mordaunt to become the next PM.

Andover MP Kit Malthouse and North East Hampshire MP Ranil Jayawardena have also been contacted for comment but have not yet provided a response.
