AN ANDOVER park is set to undergo a major facelift, with more play facilities planned, the borough council has revealed.

Test Valley Borough Council have begun talks to improve Vigo Road Recreation Ground. As part of the plans, a new water splash pad could be installed.

The proposals have been developed based on a community consultation undertaken through the Andover Vision programme, expected to help guide the improvement and development of the park.

Speaking at a meeting of the council's cabinet, council leader Cllr Phil North said: “The plans include gym stations, cafe and car parking on the side.

“Most importantly, local people are asking to improve the play area. There is an aspiration to have a recreational play area that will be designed and set up by 2023. We will be looking at the plan that includes a water playing facility. There's a lot of talk about a splash pad.”

The plan has been developed following a series of workshops with Andover schools and groups, along with a number of events and markets attended.

This feedback helped Andover Vision develop a picture of the community’s thoughts and aspirations for the popular green space in St Mary’s ward.

The survey received 575 responses from residents across Andover and the surrounding villages. When asked what would make them stay for longer at the park, people mentioned improving the play provision, introducing water play, food or drink offerings, toilets, and more sports facilities.

The outcome of the consultation was presented to the Andover Vision members’ group in April this year with the recommendation being that the group supported the drafting of a site management plan.

During the cabinet meeting on Wednesday, October 26, a management plan, which included the proposals, was approved.

The management plan will be delivered by the community and leisure and environmental services teams.

The council is hoping to achieve and retain the Green Flag park excellence award for Vigo Road ground after its redevelopment.

The current facilities at the ground include a bowling green with an accessible rink, bowls club house, children’s play area, two tennis courts, performance space with pop-up power, mature landscaping and trees, and numerous benches around the perimeter.
