A MYSTERY substance, which looks like fuel, has been spotted flowing through the River Anton in Andover - four months after a leak caused great concern to residents and wildlife lovers.

The substance was noticed by passers-by on Monday, April 24, and it has upset local residents who are fearful of the damage it is causing to both the environment and wildlife.

It is the second time that an unknown fluid has seeped into the river - in January a substance was spotted in the river. In March it was revealed that 30,000 litres of the liquid, thought to be oil, had leaked into the body of water.

The Environment Agency was able to find the source of the spillage and worked with contractors to stop the release.

This week, the substance was reportedly seen up and down the stream near Iceland, on Bridge Street.

Richard Rowles wrote on Facebook: "More pollution in our rivers. So it continues. It looks like another major incident on the Anton. When will it end?"

Andover's MP, Kit Malthouse on Monday, March 27 raised the issue in the House of Commons, calling for reassurances that "those responsible are held to account".

Mr Malthouse was speaking during a debate into a huge oil spill at Pool Harbour, which is believed to have started at around 7am on Sunday, March 26.

The business behind the first leak has yet to be officially confirmed by the Environment Agency (EA).

An EA spokesperson said: “We received several reports of oil iridescence on the River Anton yesterday, Monday, April 24, following recent rainfall. Specialist contractors attended the area and fortunately found no signs of significant pollution with minimal impact on the local environment."

Anyone with information about this incident, or any other suspected pollution in our rivers and streams, can call the EA 24-hour incident hotline on 0800 807060.
