A DOG that was hit by a car risks being put down unless thousands can be raised to fund its vet bill.

Two-year-old Benji escaped from his garden and was struck by a car in mid-August.

The Whitchurch-based pooch suffered injuries to his leg and visited the vets three times a week for wound cleaning and bandage changes.

Despite this, Benji's leg hasn't healed and he now requires skin grafts, amputation or, in the worst-case scenario, being put down.

Benji's owner, Christopher Taylor, who is on benefits, faces bills of up to £4,000 to help Benji, but he has since been decamped from his housing association property due to asbestos and damp issues and is currently being temporarily housed in a room above a local pub.

A fundraiser to help Benji was started by Christopher's friend, Bonnie Boyd, from Tadley. She hopes to raise the necessary money to cover his vet bills.

Bonnie said: “The vets have advised that if neither option can be funded, they would recommend putting Benji to sleep. This is not an option we want to take — he is only just reaching the age of two and still has loads of life left."

Any funds raised will go directly towards covering Benji’s ongoing treatment and giving him the best possible chance to recover.

So far, the campaign has raised £295 of its £500 goal.

Bonnie added: "With no insurance and being on benefits, there is no way to fund Benji's fees without the kind help of others.

"We would be grateful for any help with funding His vet fees, as we are being advised it could cost approximately £4,000."
