Major ecological improvement works are set to begin on a riverside.

The work, led by Southern Water and beginning this spring, will focus on the River Anton in Andover at Western Avenue to enhance biodiversity and improve the overall health of the chalk stream.

This follows earlier improvements already in progress at Folly Park.

The scheme includes in-channel enhancements, new planting, and tree and shrub management to support the river’s ecosystem.

Councillor Phil North, leader of Test Valley Borough Council, said: "The River Anton plays an important part in our plans for a greener, more welcoming town centre.

"Southern Water’s work sits alongside our own project to create a new riverside park.

"The park will celebrate our internationally important chalk stream and gives people more space to enjoy nature in the heart of Andover.

"The river’s unique chalk stream habitat supports a range of important wildlife, and this work will make sure it continues to thrive as a home for them and is a valued resource for the town."

Christopher Woolhouse, Water Resources Environmental Resilience Strategy Manager at Southern Water, said the improvements form part of a wider effort to restore the river through the centre of Andover.

He said: "These enhancement works to improve the ecological resilience of the Upper River Anton along Western Avenue will importantly link up with Southern Water’s river restoration works at Folly Park and along Charlton Road, resulting in a total reach of 1.5km of enhanced chalk river through the centre of Andover.

"This will tackle the historical modifications made to the river channel and give native wildlife dependent upon the river, such as trout, water voles and otters, the habitat needed to flourish."

The project is a collaboration between Southern Water, Test Valley Borough Council, Hampshire County Council, and the Environment Agency.

The environmental improvements will complement Test Valley Borough Council’s planned riverside park, which is set to begin construction in January 2027.

The park will include improved walking and cycling routes and new views of the water.
