A ROUND-UP of the latest Andover cases heard in Basingstoke Magistrates' Court, including a man who stole five handbags and a drug driver.

A thief who stole five handbags from an Andover store has been given a suspended prison sentence and ordered to pay hundreds of pounds in compensation.

Dean Hutchinson, 36, of no fixed abode, admitted stealing the bags, worth £300 in total, from TK Maxx in Andover on March 19 this year.

Hutchinson was handed a four‑month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, after magistrates said the offence was so serious that only a custodial term could be justified.

He was also ordered to pay £300 compensation to the store, with his guilty plea taken into account in sentencing.

A driver has been banned after being caught behind the wheel on the A303 with cannabis in his system.

Samuel Paton, 37, of Downs Road, South Wonston, Winchester, pleaded guilty to drug-driving on the A303 westbound at Longparish, near Andover, on November 23, 2025.

The court heard that a blood test showed a level of Delta‑9‑Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) of not less than 2.5 micrograms per litre, above the legal limit of 2 micrograms.

Magistrates imposed a 12‑month driving disqualification and fined Paton £120, with a £48 victim surcharge and £40 prosecution costs, to be paid in monthly instalments of £70 from April.
