A children’s hospice charity has hosted a summer party for seriously ill young people and their families.

The event took place at Naomi and Jack’s, which supports babies, children and young adults across central southern England.

It aimed to give families in its care an opportunity to enjoy a summer event in a safe and accessible environment.

Claire Potterton, play and activities manager at Naomi and Jack’s, said: "The Schools Out party was such a brilliant day.

"It was lovely to have a big turnout from children, young adults and families, who were all able to socialise, relax, have fun and enjoy the day together.

"There really was a sense of community and togetherness between families, which was a joy to see.

"This is the first event of this kind that we’ve hosted at Naomi and Jack’s.

"We wanted to put on a party for families that otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend an event like this over the summer, due to the complexity of their child’s condition.

"The summer holidays can make some families feel isolated and we wanted those in our care to know that we are here for them this summer.

"They can come together at Naomi and Jack’s with likeminded people, in a safe space with understanding and care, to have a day of fun."

The day included a disco with a DJ, garden games, water play, face painting and visits from character mascots.

Children were also treated to a sweet treats station, crafts table and a barbecue prepared by Naomi and Jack’s catering team.

One of the day’s highlights was an animal experience provided by Andover-based Feathers, Fangs and Furries, who volunteered their time to bring a bearded dragon, snake, hedgehog, tortoise and other creatures for families to meet.

Claire said: "I was also delighted to see some young adults attend Naomi and Jack’s for the first time at the party.

"They were able to enjoy an atmosphere that they may not have been expecting and showed excitement to come again.

"Thank you to the team at Feathers, Fangs and Furries, our volunteers and to everyone that made the party possible.

"There was a massive staff water fight to end the day and celebrate the efforts of everybody who helped create this wonderful event for the families in our care."

Children and young adults also took part in a LEGO lucky dip, which was donated to Naomi and Jack’s by Fairy Bricks.
