Buying and renewing railcards via the Railcard website has become a struggle for train passengers in recent weeks, according to Money Saving Expert.

While Railcard is trying to find a solution, MoneySavingExpert.com has found about 40 complaints that have been posted on social media in the last two weeks.

Those complaining have been trying to buy or renew their railcard via Railcard’s website.

Railway Delivery Group (RDG) has insisted that the tech issue only impacted a small amount of people.

If you’re struggling to buy or renew a railcard and you need to do it urgently, MoneySavingExpert.com has put together some tips to help you out.

Renew or buy a new railcard

MoneySavingExpert.com recommends downloading the latest version of the Railcard app since RDG has said doing this and clearing the browser could help solve the problem if you’re buying it online.

If this is unsuccessful, you can contact Railcard either through social media or on 0345 3000 250 and a member of the team can help you.

Alternatively, you can try buying a railcard via a staffed ticket office but only if you’re looking to buy a one year railcard which cannot be bought online. Having said this, you won’t be able to buy the 16-17, the 26-30 or the Disabled Person’s railcard from a ticket office because these are only available to buy online.

Some third-party websites also sell railcards so if you’re still struggling, you can try buying via Avanti, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and LNER.

If, despite paying for it, you haven’t received your railcard or you’d like to get a refund on the full-price train tickets you bought after failing to organise a renewal or to buy a new railcard, you can call Railcard on 0345 3000 250 or email via railcardhelp@nationalrail.co.uk. You can also reach Railcard via Twitter and Facebook.
