SPECTACTORS at Mortimer Fireworks Display have spoken of their terror after a stray rocket allegedly flew into the crowd at tonight's event.

According to multiple eyewitness reports, a firework flew towards bystanders during the village's annual firework and bonfire night event.

The Gazette has contacted the organisers of the event for comment but they have not yet responded.

Danielle Marie Roberts posted to Facebook: "It was so scary, the fireworks from the display fell over and headed right towards the crowd. Was literally eye level with me and exploded behind.

"Then once all had calmed down there was more explosions in the crowd that seemed to have come from the houses next to the field. I really do hope everyone there was okay."

A photograph published on Berkshire Live's website shows a number of police cars at the scene of the event in the village.

While Elizabeth Singleton wrote: "Two fireworks went off into the crowd. It looked as though they had gone sideways and bashed straight into the crowd. We saw it clearly as the first firework hit the crowd three times.

"After that, medical attention was requested over the tannoy system. A little while later, fireworks went off in the field next to where we were (opposite end of spectator area to the organised display).

"After all had died down that's when a huge firework landed then exploded in the middle of the crowd. It wasn't already going off like the ones from the display had done so I would assume it had been thrown at the people."

Thames Valley Police have also been contacted.
