NEWLY promoted Andover New Street beat Hamble Club 2-0 recording their first win in the Wessex League Premier Division, writes TIM BATES.

The home side went ahead just after half- time as Callum Sweeney scored from 20 yards out with a clinical strike. New Street's Shane Lock then grabbed the second putting them in pole position.

Home goalkeeper George Baxter was the hero of the day, as he saved a penalty with just 10 minutes to go.

This was after McAulie Stubbs was harshly penalised for a push in the area.

New Street's back four of Josh Wilson, Wade Crisp, Stubbs and Oliver Georgiou delivered an outstanding performance as along with Baxter, the club enjoyed their first clean sheet in the league this season.

After the game New Street manager John Smith said: "I am really pleased with the win as all the boys put in a shift and deserved it. We defended really well and always looked dangerous going forward.

"It was nice to move off the bottom and now we want to get a run going and move up the table as our aim this season is to stay in this division. It has been tough for us as we have played six away games, but now we have a series of home games coming up."

New Street continue their league campaign at home to mid table Cowes Sport on Saturday and on October 17 they are at home to Hamble Club again, this time in the first round of the Russell Cotes Cup.
