ANDOVER New Street’s league season got underway on Wednesday night with a 2-1 defeat against Whitchurch United.

A slow first-half only saw few chances for either sides, with neither able to break the deadlock until the 38th minute.

A ball through behind saw Luke Hooper through in behind and he calmly finishes past the keeper.

Just three minutes later and Thompson had the chance to make it 2-0, but a chipped effort went just over the bar.

Declan Shuttleworth equalised for the visitors on the stroke of half time with a free header from a free kick following a handball.

Street would have been frustrated to have conceded with virtually the last kick of the half.

On the hour mark, Thompson had another half chance to get on the scoresheet, but this time his effort was high and wide.

Street made all three substitutions between the 60th and 70th minutes - Luke Hooper coming off to be replaced by Ross Belbin, Charlie Rogers replacing Kieron Le Brun, and Cam Thatcher replacing Michael Davis.

Whitchurch completed their comeback with 20 minutes to go - Dave Parry breaking through the lines and scoring past Street’s goalkeeper Christopher Wing.

Up next for New Street is a trip to Shepton Mallett on Saturday afternoon for the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Qualifying round.

Following that they will return to league action on Saturday, August 14, when they host Infinity (Fareham) at Foxcotte Park.
