Andover Cricket Club’s 1st XI will play Division One cricket next season after a superb late-season charge secured promotion from Southern Premier League Division Two.
An inconsistent opening half of the campaign left Andover with plenty of work to do, with defeats interspersed with some impressive victories and two matches lost to the weather.
However, they found their best form when it mattered most, producing a remarkable run during the second half of the summer.

A victory over Waterlooville on July 11 proved the catalyst.
Despite subsequent defeats against Sway and Portsmouth & Southsea, Andover were outstanding throughout August, winning four consecutive matches against Hook & Newnham Basics, Liphook & Ripsley, Sparsholt and New Milton.
That run included a thumping 200-run victory over Sparsholt before Andover comfortably chased 119 to beat New Milton by seven wickets in their penultimate fixture.
They eventually finished on 208 points, level with Portsmouth & Southsea, but Andover’s superior run rate saw them take second place and, crucially, promotion to Division One.
Zimbabwe international Nyasha Mayavo enjoyed an outstanding campaign and finished as Division Two’s leading run-scorer with 630 runs.
Mayavo was equally influential behind the stumps, completing 25 dismissals, the highest tally in the division.
There were also hugely encouraging signs for the club’s future.
Cameron Mitchinson enjoyed a breakthrough season at just 15 years old, scoring 311 runs to finish second in Andover’s batting charts while also taking 20 wickets – a remarkable contribution from one of the club’s brightest young prospects.
Eduardo Martins also impressed in his first season of Southern Premier League cricket.
Entrusted with opening the batting, Martins accumulated 292 runs, while Harri Williams (288), Matt Knight (263), Sanjeet Garood (238), John Nyumbu (211) and Matt Hooper (199) all made valuable contributions.
With the ball, John Nyumbu led the way with 33 wickets, finishing as Division Two’s leading wicket-taker.
Mitchinson and Babu Veettil both claimed 20, Matt Hooper added 18 and Hugo Bishop 14 as Andover developed a varied and effective attack.
After a campaign that required patience from its supporters during an uneven start, Andover’s outstanding late-season form ultimately proved decisive.
Promotion represents a significant achievement for a side blending experienced performers with an exciting crop of young players – and sets up the prospect of Division One cricket at London Road in 2027.
Andover seconds crowned champions after dominant campaign
Andover Cricket Club’s 2nd XI capped a superb 2026 season by being crowned league champions and securing promotion to Hampshire League Division Three.
Under captain Jez Hayward, Andover were the outstanding side in the division, finishing top after a campaign in which they lost just once.
They recorded 12 victories from their 17 fixtures and amassed 290 points, their average of 22.31 putting them clear of nearest challengers Breamore Dravidians.
The consistency of Andover’s performances was underlined by a formidable batting line-up, with no fewer than five different players scoring centuries during the campaign.
Nathan Birks topped the team’s run-scoring charts with 443 runs, an especially impressive achievement having battled through the season while continuing his recovery from knee surgery.
Sri Lankan all-rounder Thanura ‘Kel’ Watta Waduge was another major contributor with 372 runs, while skipper Hayward led from the front with 352, including a century.
One of the stories of the season was the return of Andy Green, who rejoined Andover after a remarkable 20-year absence from the club.
Green showed he had lost little of his run-scoring ability, accumulating 350 runs and marking his comeback campaign with a century.
Youngsters James Bird (271) and George Green (267) provided further depth, while Brandon Smith and George Hopton also joined the century-makers club during a memorable summer.
Andover produced some extraordinary batting displays along the way.
They piled up 422-5 against Over Wallop in a 191-run victory and finished their home campaign by smashing 333-5 against Amesbury, winning by 155 runs.
The bowling attack proved equally effective.
Spinner Anil Thakor led the way with 24 wickets, followed by pacers John Wilkinson with 18 and Ashwin Vasudevan with 17.
Vasudevan’s season included a memorable five-wicket haul, while newcomer Andy Lessey impressed in his first campaign with the club, taking 11 wickets and establishing himself as an important member of the side.
Andover’s only defeat came away to Breamore in August, but even there the batting showed its strength by making 336 in pursuit of a mammoth 397.
For Hayward and his side, the title was the reward for a season of remarkable consistency, huge contributions throughout the squad and a batting unit capable of producing runs from almost anywhere.
Champions, promoted and beaten only once – Andover’s 2nd XI could hardly have asked for a better 2026.
Andover 3rd XI – youngsters shine in encouraging campaign
Andover 3rd XI enjoyed a highly respectable season, finishing sixth in the table with six victories and providing an important platform for some of the club’s emerging young players to make their mark in senior cricket.
Leading the way was teenager Mattie Thain, who topped the side’s batting charts with 317 runs.
Thain’s performances were one of the major positives of the campaign, demonstrating his growing ability to contribute consistently at senior level.
He also chipped in with seven wickets, including a maiden league five-wicket haul late in the season.
Elliot Mathias was another consistent contributor with 277 runs, while veteran Vinay Malhotra enjoyed an excellent all-round season, scoring 237 runs and leading the bowling attack with 14 wickets.
Ronan Brown added 200 runs, while Chris Hooper, Callum Bird, Alex Burns and Arav Pareek contributed throughout the summer.
With the ball, captain Thuva Tharmalingam claimed eight wickets, while the likes of Ethan Leybourne, Charlie Pugovics-Smith, Richard Taylor and Hari Thakar all played their part.
A sixth-place finish represented a solid campaign for a side balancing competitiveness with the development of younger players – with Thain’s emergence perhaps the biggest success of all.
Andover 4th XI – another strong mid-table finish
Andover 4th XI also enjoyed a positive season, finishing fifth after recording seven victories in a competitive division.
As with the thirds, one of the most encouraging aspects of the campaign was the contribution made by the club’s teenagers.
Oscar Veetill was outstanding with the bat, topping the run charts with 319 runs from just seven innings at an average of 53.17.
He passed 50 four times, with a highest score of 73, and scored his runs at a strike rate above 100 – an excellent return in senior cricket.
Fellow youngster Kazi Mohammad Yasin Bin Rafiq led the bowling with 12 wickets, another encouraging sign of the depth of young talent progressing through Andover’s senior sides.
Neal Thakar took 10 wickets, Luca Coombs nine and Hashim Mohammad and Finley Perrin eight apiece, while Angus McMahon contributed strongly across the season, scoring 188 runs and taking seven wickets.
The fourths eventually finished fifth with 201 points, having won seven and lost six of their completed matches, alongside two cancellations and two abandonments.
For a team playing an important role at the intersection of senior cricket and player development, fifth represented an excellent outcome – particularly with teenagers Veetill and Kazi leading the side’s batting and bowling respectively.
