ANDOVER, in the late 1960s / early 1970s, was on the cusp of redevelopment and much of the town was captured by a keen local photographer Jeffrey Saunders.

Here can be seen a busy High Street in about 1967 pre-development compared with the same scene today in 2018.

The circa 1967 image shows a busy street scene on market day with the southbound traffic in the Lower High Street queuing up to turn left or right on to the A303, which then ran through the town, with the option after turning left of then turning right up the Winchester Sreet.

The staggered junction for London Street, Winchester Street, Bridge Street and the Lower High Street was traffic light controlled and, what with the Andover to Redbridge railway’s level crossing in Bridge Street, immense congestion occurred, especially during the summer months with holiday traffic.

The northbound traffic up the Lower High Street drove up the other side of the street and included traffic for Newbury and Marlborough, with the Upper High Street handling two-way traffic together with pavements on both sides of the street.
