I READ Paul Goddard’s letter entitled ‘Back to the polls’ (Letters September 28).

He referred to letters written by myself along with Messrs Oram and Barrell.

Clearly he didn’t read them very carefully. Hopefully he will read the erudite contribution by Ed Treadwell which preceded his missive.

It clearly explains why we should not remain in the EU.

He also repeats the classic propagandists lie that one side’s lies (the leavers) are worse than the others! Get real. Remember how to tell if a politician is lying? They open their mouth. Hoary old joke but sadly true so often.

I have no political affiliation because I don’t trust any of them.

The EU isn’t much stronger.

They’re just more of them!

As for staying in so we have a voice, who is he kidding? It is the unelected commissioners who have the clout (whereas our unelected upper house doesn’t). The MEPs are currently split into eight parties regardless of nationality and can remove the commission but the chances of getting a consensus is not reasonable to say the least.

Gosh! We’ll need a visa to travel in Europe. So that would be like we do pretty much anywhere else in the world. Big deal.

As for the Irish border, I found it very interesting to listen to the guy who is in charge of Harwich container port. He explained there were no customs officials opening random containers and there was even a railway taking goods off site. He explained every check was actually ‘intelligence led’ and very successful. He also suggested the same system could easily be applied to the Irish border very simply. Of course, he’s just a subject matter expert so don’t argue with him unless you are.

But as I pointed out, do we want to be hooked in with the EU when Italy breaks up?

The Greek debacle will be like a pinprick.
