DRIVERS regularly speed along a road on which a pedestrian was stuck and killed last night, according to local residents.

Police have confirmed that a 38-year-old man from Andover has died after he was struck by a car in Charlton Road on the night of Monday, December 23.

An investigation into the incident has since been opened.

This morning (Tuesday) residents have responded to the news.

Although many did not witness the incident first hand, some said they could “see a scenario” in which an incident like this would occur.

One resident of Hillside Villas said: “The first I heard anything was about 9.45pm. They were putting some bollards up there and I thought it was roadworks.

“I looked out the window and that’s when I saw the blue lights.”

He continued: “It’s sad to say but I can almost see a scenario where it’s happened. The pathway is barely big enough for one person to walk down.”

Another neighbour added: “We weren’t in at the time it must have happened. But there are people speeding up this road all the time.

“Even yesterday when we were walking back from the pub we could see people speeding up, but then they slowed down when they saw the police had blocked it off.”

Officers closed off a section of Charlton Road while they dealt with the incident, which took place near Parkview Close.

A cordon was put up between the entrance to Parkview Close and the junction for Andover Salto Centre just the other side of the bridge.

Parkview close itself was also closed off, although once again residents of the cul-de-sac say they did not see the incident itself.

“The police just came around and told us they had to block off the road,” said one resident. “We didn’t hear anything, just got advised that we wouldn’t be able to get out of the close.”

Officers are reported to have spoken to those living in the street, explaining the situation and asking if anyone had CCTV footage that could help with their investigations.

“I thought it was really good of them,” said another person of Parkview Close.

“It was obviously a really serious incident, but they were taking the time to come around and tell people and apologise.”

She added: “It’s just very sad at this time of year.”
