Shut: the restaurant this morning

JAMIE Oliver’s Union Jacks restaurant in Winchester has closed its doors for the last time.

The pizzeria, which served toppings such as pork crackling, closed over the weekend.

Signage outside has been removed, and a notice was placed in the window.

The news confirms the reports in the Chronicle last autumn that the restaurant on the High Street was set to close. It was denied at the time.

The notice reads: “The Jamie Oliver group has decided to close its Unions Jacks restaurants in Chiswick, Holborn and Winchester.

“After a full review it was concluded that these businesses were no longer sustainable in the current challenging climate. All our amazing staff have been fully consulted and we very much hope that we can transfer them to other restaurants within the group.

“We would like to thank all of our fantastic customers for their support, and apologise if we have caused you any inconvenience today.

“Union Jacks in the Piazza in Covent Garden, London, remains fully operational and we would love to welcome you there.”

The restaurant opened in May 2012.

Not surprising really. The restaurant was ill-conceived, with over-priced erstatz pizzas on offer in a city centre already overstuffed with pizza chains. The staff were excellent with kids though. I'd love to see soemthing different opening up, like a branch of Wahaca or Wagamama's perhaps...

Wagamamas is already coming, to Jewry Street (subject to planning permission I believe).

Wahacas would be good or Carluccios.

This was a poorly conceived format and not a reflection on the great staff or Winchester. Witness Chococo, a chocolate shop and cafe just opened opposite, the opening of Vodka nightclub and how few empty retail units there are.
