Personal Overview - Likely to be a moderate member, from a traditional Conservative educational and family background. He was in Government until 1986, then recalled as a Whip in 1990. His career advanced under John Major's leadership, and continued in Opposition in Shadowing Defence and as Shadow Leader of the House of Commons (also having Constitutional Affairs added to his portfolio in 1999). Unsuccessfully stood for the role of Speaker of the House of Commons (October 2000), and has remained on the Back benches holding several Select Committee memberships.
