Andover tinker with new skipper Taylor

11:52pm Sunday 27th December 2009

ANDOVER Cricket Club will have a new first XI captain next year, after Richard Taylor was unanimously voted in to the role at the club’s AGM last week. Taylor takes over the reins from departing skipper Roger Miller, who has left the club after seven successful years at the helm. “Getting us back into the top division is my aim for the coming season” Taylor said from New Zealand, where he is spending the winter playing cricket in Wellington. “We have a first team squad who are young and hungry for success. “I think our lack of experience will make this a challenging year at times, but I’ve no doubt this is a challenge we can rise to.” Taylor is one of four new captains for the club next season. The second team will be led by Andy Sail, last season’s third team skipper, replacing Mike Adams, who is stepping down to try to cement a place in the club’s first XI. The thirds will now be led by Pete van de Westhuizen, who is stepping up from his highly successful role as fifth team captain, while Matt Goodman is stepping into van de Westhuizen’s shoes and taking over the helm for the fifth team. The sixth team will once again be captained by Dave Richards, while the fourth team captain is yet to be decided, and the Sunday firsts and seconds will once again be captained by Jonty Hadfield and Jody Everett respectively. The AGM also saw a changeover in personnel off the field, with Brian Funnell stepping down from the post of chairman, after holding the position for 20 years, and Andy Hooper stepping down as club president. The pair will continue to be involved with the club, working on the club’s proposed move to a new ground among other things. Tim Keighley is the new president, while Paul Funnell is taking over as chairman from his dad. As ever, the club is on the look out for new players and anyone interested in joining is invited to attend winter nets, which are held every Sunday at John Hanson School, from January 10 until the start of the season.
