A COUPLE from Cricketers Way will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, 3 November.

Irene and Stan Chambers, who live in Rhodes Court, were married on 3 November, 1962, in Edmonton, London.

They met five years previously after an evening at a jazz club in Edmonton.

Irene said: “We met and got chatting on top of a bus and took it from there. We were the only ones up there with our friends.”

Stan added: “There was an instant attraction.”

The couple were together for five years before they married, and they went to Cornwall for their honeymoon.

“It was very cold. We played a bit of tennis, sat around a coal fire and did some painting,” said Irene.

They moved to Andover in 1966 and have remained on the Cricketers Way estate ever since, despite moving three times.

The couple have five children and 12 grandchildren and are looking forward to celebrating their anniversary surrounded by family members, along with one of their bridesmaids and the best man.

They both love reading and lead active lives, with a shared passion for travelling which over the years has seen them visit countries including America, China and Canada.

The couple shared their secret for a long and happy marriage.

Stan said: “We are both opposites and what do people say about opposites?

“They attract.”

Irene said: “I’m more outgoing and join clubs.

“You have got to have things in common and being open with each other as well.”
