Andover Advertiser: Grandsons fly in as Cora reaches 100 Grandsons fly in as Cora reaches 100

A WEYHILL resident who was born before the outbreak of the First World War has just celebrated her 100th birthday.

Cora Metcalfe was born on 7 June 1914 in Bradford before moving to Leeds.

She spent most of her life in Yorkshire before moving to the Andover area at the age of 98 in 2012.

Working as a teacher during the outbreak of the Second World War, Cora took the children out of Bradford to the Dales to escape the bombing.

Eventually Cora gave up teaching when she had children of her own.

Cora prided herself on being an excellent sewer and embroiderer and also loved playing the piano.

She has two children, three grandchildren and one-greatgrand child.

On her birthday Cora went to her daughter Lynne Mayo’s Andover home where she was joined by her son.

Her three grandsons flew in especially from Malaysia, the United States and New Zealand.

Cora now lives at Millway House nursing home where she still actively enjoys doing quizzes and crosswords and writing letters.
