OFFICERS investigating a rogue trader incident in Shipton Bellinger are urging members of the public to look out for their elderly and vulnerable neighbours.

The incident occurred between 12.30pm and 1.30pm on Wednesday, July 30 at an address on Parkhouse Road.

A man, who introduced himself as Mr Lee, approached the home of a 79-year-old woman and offered his services to cut her hedge. This was refused but the man cut it anyway and then demanded payment but the woman did not pay him.

After the man had left the address, the victim noticed that a wallet containing cash and a chequebook were missing.

PC Alex Hall from Basingstoke police station said: “I would like to speak to anyone who may have seen this man, who was aged in his 40s or 50s, in the area or who may have been approached and offered hedge cutting services.

“A blue van was seen in the area at the time of the incident. If you noticed a blue van please contact us as it may be relevant to this investigation.

“Please remember to ask anyone who knocks on your door for identification and if you are thinking about having any work done follow these tips: • Ask friends or relatives to recommend tradesmen • Ask for a written quote • Shop around before making a decision • Don’t pay upfront and pay by cheque or credit card • Keep an eye out for any elderly relatives or neighbours.”

If you have any concerns about rogue traders, please contact your local Safer Neighbourhoods team by calling 101.
