A CHILBOLTON WEDDING

On Tuesday morning the marriage was solemnised in Chilbolton Church of the Rev.R.F.R.Routh, eldest son of the Rev.R.S.Routh, vicar of Longstock, and Miss Ida Crowley, daughter of the Rev.C.E.Crowley, rector of Chilbolton. Owing to recent bereavement in both families the wedding took place very quietly at 8.30. In spite of the early hour a large number were present. The marriage service was taken by the Rev.J.Fowler, Vicar of S.James, Milton, Portsea, and a short impressive address was given by the Rec.Canon Cunningham. Celebration of the Holy Communion immediately followed the service at which the bride and bridegroom and near relatives communicated. The bride wore a simple and very pretty gown of white ninon with old lace Breton wedding cap.

On leaving the church the newly married pair found their path strewn with flowers and the bells range a happy peal. Soon after 10 o’clock the bride and bridegroom left the rectory and received a most kind and hearty send off as they Passed up the village on their way to Andover Junction en route for the Lake District.

Later in the day many beautiful presents were on view.

ADVERTISEMENT — AN OLD ANDOVER CUSTOM PRESERVED

Many years ago the founders of Parsons and Hart, of Andover, started in a small way the Waterloo Club. There was nothing unusual in this, even in those days. The unusual thing was that all the members were given a bonus of no less than 3/ 4 in the £. Such terms, of course, have been recognised by townsfolk as being exceptional and the Club has grown to its present dimensions, and from September 16 Waterloo House, Andover, will be thronged with people reaping the harvest of their thrift during the past year. The same bonus is being given today, and new members will be welcomed. Messrs. Parsons and Hart do not know of any other club in England where such generous terms are given, and now as always the qualities of Parsons and Hart’s goods are difficult to equal.

DON’T FORGET—JOIN THIS WEEK.

THE “ADVERTISER” INVESTIGATES . . . THE MARRIAGE SCENE

Most young couples, with the possible exception of conscientious objectors, beatniks and confirmed atheists, at some time contemplate having a church wedding. Members of the female sex at least, see it as something romantic and exciting even if their masculine counterparts do not appear to share their enthusiasm, And in most cases it is accepted as a matter of course that a wedding with “all the trimmings” is an unprecedented foundation for married life.

But what is it that drives young people in their thousands, particularly at this time of year, to commit themselves to what can be a considerable drain from their savings and indeed from those of their parents?

It would seem that many of those married in church do so from convention rather than from religious motives.

For many too, the service can be a nerve racking ordeal and the series of complicated arrangements for the celebrations that follow it, only an additional strain on what is commonly held as a step of untold significance.

Certainly, mothers will warm at the prospect of seeing their offspring bedecked in white. And undoubtedly the occasion will give the friends and relatives a good opportunity for getting together. But this seems inadequate justification for going to so much expense.

Perhaps the whole protracted business satiates a need for ceremony, which from the study of more primitive civilisations, would appear to be inherent in the human make-up.

Much as the coronation is an occasion for national participation, so the marriage of two people offers an opportunity for other members of the family to take part. After all for those who consider their marriage as something just between themselves, there is no compulsion to invite a large number of guests.

LIONS CELEBRATE WITH GOAL FEAST

Andover 7 Croydon Ath 1

Andover boss John Waugh was named as the BHL Southern Division’s manager-of-the-month for August and the Lions promptly went out to celebrate with a seven-goal spanking of Croydon Athletic in Tuesday night’s FA Cup preliminary round replay at the Portway Stadium.

The Lions, a yard quicker in though and deed than they were on Saturday, could even afford to give the Greene King Spartan League outfit a goal start before racing away to their biggest win since they crushed Basingstoke 8-0 in the final of the Hants Senior Cup 25 years ago.
