POLICE have issued a public warning after a substance used to euthanise animals was taken during a burglary at a Hampshire veterinary practice.

Officers believe entry was gained to the building of GP Vets, in Worting Road, Basingstoke, between 9pm on Friday, 25 September, and 8am yesterday (Saturday, 26) when the break-in was discovered.

A large quantity of barbiturates and opiates were taken in the break-in, including a substance used to euthanise animals.  A small amount of this substance would be fatal if consumed by a human.

Police Constable Mike Ahearne of the Northern Investigation team said: “We would advise anyone who   may come across any of the substances not to ingest them under any circumstances. Without knowing what you are taking the consequences could be fatal.

“We are also appealing to anyone who may be able to help us identify who is responsible. This will help us to take the stolen drugs off the streets quickly.”

Anyone with information should contact the Northern Investigation team on 101. Alternatively, information can be left anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
