RUGBY players in Hampshire will stand shoulder to shoulder in solidarity to remember a promising young sportsman who died in a car crash.
Teams from across the county will observe a minutes’ silence before this afternoon’s Hampshire Rugby Football Union (RFU) matches in memory of Macaulay Campbell.
It comes as players from his beloved Romsey Rugby Club will this afternoon remember the 20-year-old – known as Mac - a week after he was named man-of-the-match in a top of the table clash.
And thousands of people are backing plans for a music event to remember after an appeal from his loved ones went viral on the internet and captured the imagination of international music and sports stars – including pop singer Craig David As previously reported Mac, from Rownhams, died when his black VW Lupo was involved in a collision with another car on the A3057 near Romsey Golf Club at about 10.30pm last Saturday.
It was just hours after he was named man-of-the-match performance.
Romsey Rugby Club has cancelled today’s match against Southsea Nomands RFC as a mark of respect.
But teams across the county will be wearing black armbands and observing a minute’s silence before their games today.
It follows a memorandum sent out by Hampshire Rugby Football Union (RFU) this morning.
Meanwhile around 100 people – including fellow Romsey players - will gather at Romsey Rugby Club clubhouse to remember him while watching the Six Nations clash between England and Ireland.
