CONSTRUCTION for a new budget supermarket in Andover was temporarily halted after ancient remains were discovered on the site.

A spokesperson for ALDI confirmed to the Advertiser that bones, believed to be either Roman or Saxon aged, were discovered during the building of their soon-to-be completed Weyhill Road store.

Construction was halted on the site while Cotsworld Archaeology worked to excavate the remains.

Since the discovery, the Andover based charitable trust has been working to uncover the story behind the bones.

A spokesperson told the Advertiser that the trust is hoping to release the findings in the near future.

A spokesperson for Aldi said: “During the construction of our new store we found ancient remains, likely to be Roman or Saxon, on site.

"Working closely with Cotswold Archaeology we have cleared the site and building work on the store is progressing.

"We are continuing to take great care on site and will update all relevant parties should any additional artefacts be found.”
