CHILDREN at an Andover nursery are “confident, independent and sociable”, according to Ofsted inspectors.

Abbotts Ann Nursery School is celebrating after a recent report rated it ‘good’ in all areas.

The school, which is run by a voluntary committee, has high expectations for the staff, children and families.

Everyone’s view is used for self-evaluation to maintain good-quality provision.

The report said: “Staff are motivated and enthusiastic, and provide effective learning experiences for children.”

Inspectors found staff appreciate the individuality of its children and encourage parents to keep them well informed of children’s achievements at home.

The report said: “Children’s enthusiasm to be particular fictional characters develops into role play, and hide-an-seek games.”

Staff encouraged less confident children to participate with playmates.

They also praised children frequently to increase their confidence and self-esteem.

Children enjoyed healthy snacks and demonstrated a “developing awareness of good hygiene routines such as hand washing and blowing their nose”.

Inspectors saw the school’s children developing good physical skills and learning to manage risks, including enjoying the freedom to run and jump in puddles outdoors.

The report added: “They enjoy filling containers with mud and count as they add spoonsful of water.

“Children are well prepared for the next stages in their learning, including school.”

Inspectors said the nursery was not outstanding yet for two reasons.

They said although staff provide a good variety of books that parents take home, they do not make books easily available to children.

The report also said staff do not make best use of resources and environment to encourage children’s understanding of the world around them.

Emma Davies, nursery school manager, said: “We are extremely happy with our rating of ‘good’ as we feel this reflects how hardworking and committed our staff are to making sure all our children receive good opportunities to progress their learning through carefully planned activities.”
