A CROWD of thousands chanted the countdown in Andover town centre and cheered as fireworks celebrated the switching on of the town’s Christmas lights on Friday.

Visitors waved flashing glow sticks while watching over two hours of live entertainment from performers, bands and theatre groups, in a turnout which security present said beat similar celebrations in Winchester and Salisbury for marking the start of Christmas in the town.

The evening was presented by The Breeze and a big TV screen broadcasted the stage so those at the bottom of High Street could join in the festive spirit.

Andover Town Council (ATC) mayor Katherine Bird said: “I always think it is one of the highlights of the year with all of Andover coming together and it is an honour to be part of it.

“This event shows the positive spirit of this awesome town.”

Acts included Jake Ward, Matilda Murphy and the Rock Choir, Fair Play Performing Arts, Long Overdue Theatre School and Portway Glee Club performing while stalls and traders supported the show, selling hot food and snacks and providing face painting.

Youngster Chloe Horseman did the honours of turning on the lights.

Test Valley Borough Council (TVBC) leader councillor Phil North said: “The weather was perfect, and the community came out in their thousands to support this special event.

“The switch on is more than just the chance to party, it also helps to support local businesses and traders in and around the high street and raises the profile of the town in a very positive way.”

The switch-on celebration was brought together by TVBC, ATC and the Chantry Centre.
