PUPILS at a Winchester primary school were given the chance to live their fondest football fantasies as they were given the opportunity to see the Premier League Trophy up close.

Weeke Primary School was also paid a special visit by coaches from Southampton Football Club who led the children in sessions teaching the children about nutrition.

The school was put forward for the visit by Winchester and Chandler’s Ford MP Steve Brine who also attended the event.

The day kicked off an assembly led by Jez Weeks from the Premier League, which featured a special appearance from Southampton’s mascot ‘Sammy the Saint’.

Headteacher Michelle Loughrey said: “What a memorable experience for the children and staff. The Premier League trophy is an internationally recognisable symbol of sporting excellence; the opportunity to see this is in person is one we will not forget.

“We were delighted to be selected for this amazing opportunity,” she added.

Steve Brine, MP for Winchester and Chandlers Ford, said: “I was delighted to be able to bring the Premier League trophy down here to Winchester, and the looks on the kids’ faces were priceless.

“The afternoon was truly unforgettable, and the energy that the Premier League team brought to the school, especially with their excellent Primary Stars campaign, was really something.

As the public health minister determined to see us do better on children’s health and obesity, and as the local MP, the event was one I will remember for a long time.”

Abby Goodchild, deputy headteacher, said: “I couldn’t believe it when I received the call from the Premier League to tell us about the visit. On the day, the atmosphere was fantastic and to see the children’s faces as they walked into the hall to see the trophy adorned with ribbons and surrounded by our special guests was wonderful. It was a day the children will never forget”.

It is believed that Weeke is the first school in the city to host a visit by the trophy which this year was won by Manchester City with a record point haul. Southampton secured their survival on the last day.
