IT'S the community pub that serves pets too, with 'Doggy Roasts' for our four-legged friends.

The award-winning Plough Inn is in the quaint little village of Longparish and is one of the oldest pubs in the county.

Established in 1721, the Plough Inn is over 300 years old, but don't let its age fool you, this establishment has just entered its prime.

Steve Howard and Lucy Holmes took over the village pub in September 2021, the first landlords since the inn's closure in 2015. Andover Advertiser:

The couple, originally from Hull, say they have been praised for bringing their upbeat, Northern spirit to the village.

"It's not Northern hospitality, it's just good hospitality," Steve told the Advertiser. "We just talk to people, we know everyone's names."

He added: "We wanted to be somewhere we could make a difference."

Having worked in the pub trade for 30 years, Steve said that the pair were drawn to the community-owned pub because the locals are "the type of people who want to know your name... it's a real pub for the community".

The Plough Inn has numerous other unique qualities, including a range of beers "you probably won't see anywhere else around nearby".

Steve continued: "People need three things - hot food, cold beer and good service."

The Plough Inn offers "traditional pub food with a modern twist, and the prices are competitive".

One other feature that makes this pub unique is the 'Doggy Roast' - a dinner made especially for dogs.

"We recently had a table in here with about nine dogs"

Steve added that the menu for pooches has been a hit with the locals, adding: "It might be a bit of a gimmick, but they get a cracking roast dinner with roast beef, Yorkshire puddings, they eat like kings!".

The pub is a pillar of the local community, with 367 shareholders and 10 committee members.

Steve said: "Eighty per cent of the work done to the pub, except the trade work, has been done by a team of local volunteers."

Having been resurrected after one of the most difficult periods in recent history, The Plough Inn has received a new lease of life and takes the spot as February's Andover Advertiser Pub of the Month.
