Thousands of travellers have been affected by cancelled or delayed flights in recent days.

It comes as a technical issue with the UK air traffic control system occurred, seeing some planes diverted to a different location.

Although the National Air Traffic Service said on August 28 that the situation was now fixed, many flights are still being affected.

If you have a flight booked with TUI and it's been cancelled due to the issue, here are your rights and how you may be able to get a refund.

What are your rights for a cancelled TUI flight?

As TUI shares, if your flight is delayed or cancelled, "You may be eligible for compensation if your flight's delayed over three hours."

What happens if you miss your flight due to airport delays

However, not all are entitled to compensation as TUI shares that if the delay or cancellation is caused by ‘extraordinary’ circumstances you may not get compensation.

This includes flights affected by bad weather or an air traffic control strike.

But if you are entitled to compensation, TUI offers varied amounts for how much you are affected based on the length of the delay and flight distance.

The categories are as follows:

  • For all flights of 1,500 km or less- £220/ €250
  • For all intra-Community (Europe to Europe) flights of more than 1,500 km, or for all other flights between 1,500-3,500 km - £350/ €400
  • For all flights not falling under categories A or B, with the exception of flights delayed less than four hours £520/ €600

You can claim for compensation via the TUI website

Claims can take up to 14 days to sort, however during busy periods it can take longer.

Once the claim has been reviewed by TUI, they will get in touch with you to let you know if you are entitled to compensation.

But, if you are not entitled to any compensation, they will inform you as to why.
