AN ANDOVER road is likely to be closed Tuesday, March 12, to allow for emergency works.

Winchester Road, outside The Southampton Arms, is expected to be shut while Southern Water carries out works to fix a main that was leaking 'a large volume of water underneath the road'.

The works began on Wednesday, March 6, and was hoped that work would be completed overnight, but Hampshire County Council has now issued a permit and works continue.

A spokesperson for Hampshire County Council said on the Hampshire Drivers Facebook group on Thursday: "Southern Water were due to carry out emergency works from about 7pm last night to fix a main that was leaking a large volume of water underneath the road and the aim was to have the repair completed prior to this morning to allow the reinstatement to begin."

The council has said that the footpath is not closed.
